Title: Trimming Tangle
Author: viggygirl
Pairing: Grissom/Sara
Rating: PG (probably more like G...)
Summary: Grissom and Sara, decorating on their first Christmas together.
Disclaimer: I don't own these characters, I'd like to put them on my Christmas list though.
Author's Note: This ficlet is high-octane FLUFF. Fluff to the fluffiest degree. It's written for
wallflowered, who requested funny, festive fanfic for her Secret Santa gift at
bestkeptprivate. I can't promise it's funny, but hopefully it's festive enough, Merry Christmas! And thank you to
ardvari and
princessklutz04 for the lovely beta work. I don't know what I would do without you two. :) Any mistakes are my own fault.
"God Gil, what did you do?" Sara asked.
Grissom looked up with a mixture of surprise and confusion on his face as Sara walked into the room. In her arms she held a tangle of Christmas lights with a cord trailing behind her, obviously connected somewhere in the other room.
"Where did you find those?" he asked. "I didn't think I had any left."
"They were in the box marked "Christmas" in the garage," Sara sighed.
Grissom fought a smile as he watched her studying the ball of lights and wires, mentally mapping out the best way to unravel the mess. There had to be at least seven cords of various lights, a string of white appeared to be half-lit, while several multi-colored ones were flashing in a random pattern.
"Why would you just wad them up and throw them in the box, at least wrap them around something first," Sara complained, setting them down on the floor.
She walked back into the other room and unplugged the cord, muttering to herself the entire time. Grissom continued to stare at the mess with bemusement, trying to recall the last time he had actually had a reason to decorate for Christmas. Even now, it was just the two of them and the dog, but for some reason it had been enough of a reason to start pulling out the dusty boxes of his mother's decorations along with the few that Sara had accumulated over the years.
"We could just get some new lights," Grissom suggested.
Sara quashed the idea with a small frown before she plopped down on the floor beside the pile and began picking through it for the cord she had already begun to pull out of the chaos.
"Let's just see if any of these work first," she said.
"They're probably a fire hazard," Grissom warned. "One short and the entire tree could go up in flames."
"Unless the entire string works, I'm not going to keep it. That sound fair Scrooge?" Sara asked.
"Sure," Grissom answered with a smirk.
They spent the afternoon dealing with the lights before Sara managed to locate a box of missing ornaments. An exclamation of discovery sounded when she had opened the box that had been mislabeled "hall closet" to find a menagerie of glass bulbs, angels, and the rare elementary school Christmas project.
"Careful, I don't want needles everywhere," Sara cautioned as they steered the tree through the door.
"That's what the plastic is for," Grissom grunted, trying not to trip over the tarps Sara had spread across the floor.
"I don't know why we had to get one this big," Sara said when they had finally positioned it in the corner.
"It's not like we don't have the space," Grissom said. "Just think of how it will look once it's decorated."
By evening there was an almost-perfect Christmas tree strung with lights and decorated with a variety of ornaments. Grissom and Sara sat together on the couch, sharing a bottle of wine and gazing at the tree. The low tones of Christmas music wafted through the room, and every so often they would hum along with a carol they knew.
Sara took a slow deep breath and then raised up her glass.
"To our first Christmas together," she said with a hesitant smile.
Grissom smiled and brought his glass to Sara's with a soft 'clink' before they each took a small sip. They sealed the toast with a soft kiss, before they settled back into the couch; content to enjoy the comfort and joy of the season, and the moment.
