Summer, AKA the time I go insane
Jun. 25th, 2009 03:10 pmIt has been sweltering this week. Literally, you can not breathe when you go outside and then you go home and sit in a puddle of sweat and try not to move because it's just too hot to do anything. I tried so hard to hold out on using the A/C because I got through most of my life without it. And then, I was bitten by a bug of some kind of illness also known as insanity and I thought it would be a brilliant time to use the stash of yarn I have sitting around to knit an afghan. An afghan, in 90 degree weather. What is wrong with me?
This is the one I want to make. Except I have black and variegated rainbow yarn I'm going to do instead (LONG story). I managed to get half of a panel finished and then knew I wouldn't have enough yarn at the rate I was going, because the pattern says to knit with two strands. For the record, this has been a nasty reminder about how much of a pain in the ass it is to rip back when I've knit with two strands of yarn. They all twist and tangle and don't take kindly to the idea that they shouldn't all go into one tangled pile but rather two separate tangled piles. (Look at this, and then picture it as heavier yarns that are black and rainbow instead) I have a history of tangling yarn, it's like my legacy when it comes to knitting a difficult project. Plus, I think I did something to my shoulder in the midst of the ripping and winding. *sigh*
This project is even more difficult considering I couldn't exactly get the pattern for the afghan. See, it's in a book of patterns and apparently the only other thing that people rave about in that book is a baby sweater, which I have absolutely no interest in knitting. So... I'm trying to knit from a few photos I've looked at, both at the brooklyntweed blog and something floating around ravelry. Again I ask, what is wrong with me?
I can attest to the fact that it is possible to knit something without a pattern, I've done things before, and my great aunt Ethel met one of my mom's friends, fell in love with her sweater and promptly went home and knit one for herself, in about a week. Patterns aren't necessary, and I have a pretty good idea of what I'm going to need to do to get this thing to work the way I would like. It might end up thinner than I really want it to be, but I think I'm going to keep chipping away at this idea for a little while, just because I would hate for this yarn to go to waste, which is what it was doing before. Seriously, what is wrong with my brain?
In other news, I don't know if anyone here remembers when I did this meme but apparently I make exceptions for the first question. Mostly, the crick/krick/krik (whatever we call it) by my grandparents farm. For some reason, my co-worker made a point of analyzing the use of the word for ten minutes after I used it, trying to connect it with my origins in the world or something. I tried explaining that it's a regional thing, but she seems to think because of my heritage I should not have used that word. I... don't know.
And now, back to work. There are not enough words to convey how incredibly happy I am that tomorrow is Friday. Cue the celebrations people, seriously. I can not wait for the weekend.
